According to a legend told by Ovid, at the time of King Romulus there was a prolonged period of infertility in women. Women and men therefore went in procession to the sacred grove of Juno, at the foot of the Esquiline, and here bowed in an attitude of supplication. Through the rustling of leaves, the goddess said that women had to be penetrated (Initiative, which refers to Inuus, another name of the Faun) from a sacred goat terrify women, but an Etruscan augur played the oracle in the right direction sacrificing a goat and a cut from his leather strips which struck the woman's back and after ten lunar months, the women gave birth.
The Lupercalia was one of the few Roman holidays to be abolished by Christians.
(source wiki )The Lupercalia were celebrated on February 15th: in the fifth century were replaced by the celebration, then moved forward a day, Valentine (martyr of the II-III century), who was able to give so much love community of the faithful as to deserve the role of the replacement fertility festival, when men love women in love with the whip back (but only to prevent them from entering a goat, ever).
